Risperidone Induced Extrapyramidal Side Effects

Risperidone induced Extrapyramidal Side Effects- Nigrostriatal Pathway: This pathway connects the substantia nigra to the striatum. It plays a key role in regulating voluntary movement. Blockade of dopamine in this pathway by antipsychotics like risperidone can lead to EPS, including tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia (slow movement). Mesolimbic Pathway: This pathway runs from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the limbic system, which is involved in regulating emotions and reward. Dopamine blockade here helps reduce positive symptoms of schizophrenia, but it doesn't directly cause EPS. Mesocortical Pathway: This connects the VTA to the prefrontal cortex and is involved in cognition and emotional regulation. Dopamine disruption in this pathway can worsen negative symptoms or cognitive deficits but is not primarily involved in EPS. Tuberoinfundibular Pathway: This pathway runs from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland, controlling prolactin secretion. Dopamine blockade here increases prolactin levels, but this pathway isn't directly related to EPS.

The mechanism behind EPS primarily involves the blockade of dopamine D2 receptors in the nigrostriatal pathway. This case report emphasizes the need for awareness of this risk when prescribing antipsychotic medications.” …

Nervous System Overview-An Introduction to Its Structure and Functions

The human nervous system is divided into the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The CNS, comprising the brain and spinal cord, controls most bodily functions, while the PNS connects the CNS to limbs and organs. The PNS is further split into the somatic system, handling voluntary actions, and the autonomic system, regulating involuntary processes like heart rate and digestion. …
